Match report from Michael Gray

United finally got their league campaign away to High Ormlie Hotspurs in Halkirk, in what was a good test against a team tipped by many to do very well this campaign. The early exchanges saw United hold the upper hand in terms of possession with the midfield trio of Conor Trueman, Andrew Mackay and Roddy Innes linking up to great effect regularly breaking the HoH press. But for all the possession and territorial advantage, chances were at a premium. In fact, it was well over 15 mins before the first opportunity arrived when an Allan Munro ball found Marc Macgregor breach the defensive line with trialist goalkeeper Asa Sinclair advanced the striker tried to direct the ball passed him on the stretch, but the keeper retrieved the situation. The big striker was also the next recipient of a half chance when Conor Cormack did well down the right something that would be a feature of the evening cross for Macgregor to narrowly miss the target. However, it certainly was far from a one-sided affair, James More had to be alert to intercept a raking R Maclean pass that found J Mackintosh breaking the line. United suffered a blow on half hour when Grant Steven pulled up with a hamstring complaint and ironically was replaced by Innes Mackintosh who was returning from a similar injury. Moments later Sean Munro in his revised role at CB had to be very careful when marshalling Cannop in the area when the young striker latched on to a Bain pass. The deadlock was finally broken 5 minutes before the break when Cormack and Macgregor linked well to lay the ball into the path of the inrushing Innes who from 12 yards expertly side footed the ball into the net. Buoyed by the goal United created another chance this time from the left when Mackay and Montgomery linked to pick out Cormack who met the ball brilliantly with a curling left foot shot from 18 yards that just cleared the bar.

HT - HoH 0-1 PU

The second half started scrappily for United with a series of freekicks conceded in their own half through an overzealous press falling foul of referee Bremner. However, a combination of stout defending from Sean Munro and James Mclean coupled with commanding goalkeeping from James More saw actual chances created kept to a minimum despite some very decent deliveries from Webster. On 60 minutes United got the second goal they craved and in large it was all down to the corner kick delivery from Innes Mackintosh who swept the ball in with pace to the near post putting E Macgregor under huge pressure and the ball flew into the net. Although HoH certainly never wilted it was clear the goal had provided the visitors with a renewed vigour. Andrew Mackay produced a sensational run from the heart of the midfield leaving 3 men in his wake but his shot from 18 yards was smothered on this 6-yard line by Sinclair. Another Mackintosh corner on 65 mins presented Sean Munro a great chance to open his United account at the far post but his volley just flew the wrong side of the post as Reid tried to pressurise the CD. With just under 20 to go United quickly changed Macgregor for Murray and M Mackintosh for Montgomery to freshen up their attack, the two linked up well with the latter only managing to shoot at Sinclair from 12 yards. The game continued to flow towards the HoH goal as United desperately tried to press home their advantage and Conor Cormack was causing havoc first with a beautiful cross picking out James Murray whose header failed to trouble Sinclair and then M Mackintosh at the far post but again his shot couldn't find a way passed Sinclair who was having an assured night in the home net. Colin Maclean made his first appearance of the season replacing Cormack who had started to feel the onset of cramp and the striker quickly made an impression nudging the ball into the path of Murray who rolled Reid before racing into the box only to be pulled back by the retreating centre back giving referee Elder no option other than to point to the spot. Murray quickly composed himself to lash the ball home to put United 3 up. The final substitute saw Bain replace Innes and the youngster nearly made and instant impact with a tremendous left footed pass setting M Mackintosh away, but the long legs of Sutherland managed to nip the ball away before the striker could pull the trigger.
