Match report from Michael Gray

A very pleasant spring evening brought United to Wick for their Colin Macleod Cup Quarter-Final v Staxigoe, from the side that defeated Lybster in the previous round the visitors saw Conor Trueman and Shaun Forbes miss out with Sam Mackay, Andrew Mackay joining the squad along with youngsters Owen Bain and Josh Sutherland. Murray Mackintosh gave United the proverbial dream start after 6 minutes latching on to a lobbed pass from James Murray to deftly flick the ball over the advancing Shearer in the home net. The game became more of a midfield battle then with neither team really creating any great opportunities worthy of note until United doubled their lead on 30 minutes when a brilliant Andrew Mackay inswinging corner picked out Allan Munro rising highest at the far post to bullet a header down into the net. The rest of the half really was largely uneventful apart from Staxigoe missing a great chance to pull one back minutes before the break when Sam Mackay under no pressure in midfield seemed to lose his footing and lose the ball to Aitkenhead who found Steven on the run, the young forward swept a brilliant ball across the face of goal but it was just on the stretch for Banks who could only turn it over with the goal at his mercy.

HT 0-2

Staxigoe started the second period in the ascendency forcing two early corners and holding the lion's share of territory, a sloppiness had entered United's play who struggled to retain possession or enjoy any territorial advantage. However, despite Staxigoe holding the upper hand they succumbed to a rare yet swift United counter when Allan Munro found Conor Cormack, he squared up his marker Innes before delivering an inviting cross for Andrew Mackay to slam home at the far post. Shortly afterwards United made their first changes with Murray Mackintosh and Luke Manson being withdrawn for Marc Macgregor and Cameron Montgomery to enter the fray. The two substitutes in fact linked up after 65 mins allowing Montgomery a clear sight of goal but Shearer was more than up to the task. The visitors were forced to shuffle the pack again when Conor Cormack pulled up with a hip complaint was replaced by young Owen Bain for his debut After 75 mins the game was over Roddy Innes, who found himself at RB due to the reshuffle following the substitutions won the ball the air and thundered the ball forward for Marc Macgregor to drive in on goal and fired the ball into the net via the outstretched leg of the despairing Innes. United made their final change with just over 10 mins left when Andrew Mackay made way for another young debutant in Josh Sutherland, a very proud moment for his Father, I am sure. In fact, the most pleasing element of the latter stages was a brilliant switch of play from Bain releasing Sutherland who powered towards the 18-yard box but was eventually snuffed out by the retreating Staxigoe rear guard. The final moments were mainly spent in the United 3rd culminating in Banks bringing out a very smart save from More with an 18-yard snapshot.
